At the United Way’s annual Day of Caring, held on October 16, 2015, Scott Sheaffer, a volunteer from Giant, assisted Cathy Bowers, Executive Director of Maranatha-Carlisle, and Joan Jones, a Maranatha volunteer, in cleaning windows at the Maranatha office.
April 16, 2015 – Annual Carlisle C.A.R.E.S. Fundraising Dinner
Maranatha-Carlisle staff and volunteers recently attended the Carlisle C.A.R.E.S. annual fundraising dinner. The theme was movies. As seen in the photo, we portrayed the Bad News Bears.
Carlisle C.A.R.E.S. provides shelter and a day center for the homeless of Cumberland County.
December 2014 – Maranatha receives $10,000 grant
Maranatha-Carlisle recently was a recipient of a $10,000 grant, one of more than $500,000 in cash grants CommunityAid offered in late December. CommunityAid board President Rob Kole, center, noted that “Maranatha-Carlisle’s efforts to educate families on better financial management (is) a vital way to improve our community.” With these grant disbursements, CommunityAid has given $4.9 million to hundreds of local nonprofits since 2009. The funds come from sales at each of its three thrift stores. We are blessed by this very generous gift. Thank you CommunityAid!
November 4, 2014 – Presentation at Carlisle Kiwanis Club
Cathy Bowers, Executive Director of Maranatha Carlisle spoke to Carlisle Kiwanis Club today about the services Maranatha provides to clients in need of financial counseling and budgeting assistance. Club president, Reed VanDerlyke (Business Banking Officer with Orrstown Bank) showed the club’s appreciation with the gift of a children’s book!
September 1, 2014 – New Executive Director Named
After serving Maranatha for the past 11 1/2 years, Joan Jones has announced that she will be stepping down and Cathy Bowers will become the new Executive Director, effective September 1, 2014. Joan served as Board Chair for 8 1/2 years and during that time also assumed the role of Financial Manager. She became the Executive Director in July, 2011.
Cathy, formerly Manager of the Hanover Street branch of Orrstown Bank, joined Maranatha as an Account Manager in February 2012. Her management and accounting experience, as well as her caring and compassion, make her the ideal candidate for this position.
Maranatha currently serves nearly 280 individuals and families with money management including over 200 with mental health challenges. Utilizing the services of Maranatha helps to assure clients do not become homeless and their basic needs are met. Spending is planned so those quarterly and semiannual insurance and utility bills, and in some cases car repairs, do not become a crisis. Weekly checks assure clients have funds for personal needs throughout the month. Landlords more willingly rent to clients working with Maranatha. Utility services that had been terminated may be reconnected when a client begins working with Maranatha and a payment plan is set up.
May 22, 2013 – Financial Classes Held
Financial classes focusing on budgeting, credit reports and credit scores were presented in May. Maranatha counselor, Linda Rydberg, led the discussion on May 14th and Carl Krug, Vice President, Real Estate Lending, Members 1st FCU and Kevin Lee, Vice President of Operations, also from Members 1st presented the class on May 21st. Jerry Nichols, Executive Director, for Habitat for Humanity had suggested the classes to assist in raising credit scores for those making application to Habitat for Humanity for new homes and/or renovations. Participants were also given information on the First Time Homebuyers Workshop available through the Cumberland County Housing & Redevelopment Authority which may provide matching funds of $3,000 to $5,000 toward the purchase of a new home.
April 30, 2013 – New Employee Welcomed
Barrie Ann George has joined the Maranatha team, as a part-time employee, to assist in raising funds through grant writing. Barrie Ann is a graduate of Shippensburg University and has had extensive experience with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region and the United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County. We are happy to have Barrie Ann on board and look forward to working with her.
April 21-27, 2013 – National Volunteer Week
Providing financial management services for over 260 individuals/families would not be possible without the faithful support of our volunteers. During National Volunteer Week regular volunteers were recognized with flowers and cards to thank them for their many hours of dedicated service. Volunteers included: Barbara Allen, Michael Herr, Eileen Luckenbill, Shirley McKeehan, Susan Squibb and Jean Thompson. Thank you so much – we are blessed!
February 20, 2013 – Maranatha-Carlisle Celebrates 10 Years
On Wednesday, February 20, 2013, Maranatha-Carlisle celebrated 10 years of service to residents of Carlisle and the surrounding area. Board members, volunteers, and agency representatives gathered at the Maranatha office located in the former Wellington Hotel on East High Street and enjoyed refreshments provided by the Maranatha staff.
Dr. David Masland was presented a gift and recognized as one of the founders of the ministry and for his 10 years of service as a member of the board of directors. Read more in The Sentinel.
